Diagnosis of Actinomycosis

Swellings and abscesses draining pus will usually be the first sign of actinomycosis.

The infection is usually confirmed by laboratory tests. By examining a sample of the pus under a microscope, it is possible to show whether there are any yellow sulphur granules in the fluid, and to discover if the actinomyces species of bacteria are present.
