Recovery of Adenoids and adenoidectomy

An adenoidectomy is usually done in one day. A few children may have to stay in hospital overnight but this is quite rare. In some cases the tonsils may be removed at the same time.

The child’s throat will feel uncomfortable and sore at first and they will benefit from drinking cold drinks and eating very soft or mashed-up food. The child may also suffer from a blocked-up nose feeling for a short time. All side effects should disappear within a week or two.

There is no evidence to suggest that removing the adenoids affects a child’s future immunity from infection.
