Symptoms of Air embolism

Symptoms depend on where the air blockage occurs. A large air embolism affecting the brain arteries will cause immediate loss of consciousness and often convulsions (fits). It may also cause a stroke or heart attack.

Air embolism in the joints will cause pain.

Other common symptoms include:

  • Low blood pressure,
  • Irregular heartbeat,
  • Visual disturbances, 
  • Disorientation,
  • Apnoea (irregular breathing), and
  • Hypoxia (lack of oxygen flowing to the body).
