Why is it necessary? of Amniocentesis
Amniocentesis provides direct information about the likelihood of the baby developing one or more of a number of conditions, which may be either inherited or develop during the pregnancy. Disorders that may be detected by amniocentesis include:
- chromosomal conditions, such as Down’s Syndrome,
- disorders of the musculoskeletal system, such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis or spina bifida,
- blood disorders, such as haemophilia, thalassaemia or sickle cell anaemia, and
- metabolic disorders, such as phenylketonuria or antitrypsin deficiency.
