Diagnosis of Anal fistula

Diagnosis is by assessing symptoms and physical exam. Examination of the anal region may reveal a lump that may leak pus.

Follow up tests may include

  •  using an anoscope or a sigmoidoscope to inspect the lower part of the intestine,
  •  a sample of tissue may be taken (biopsy) to evaluate inflammation or to test for cancer,
  • and an ultrasound or MRI scan may reveal the route that the fistula takes.
