What is it used for? of Antacid drugs
Antacids are used to relieve the symptoms of acid reflux, caused by heartburn or indigestion. The full name for this is gastro-oesophageal reflux.
Acid reflux usually occurs:
- after eating a heavy meal,
- during pregnancy, or
- as a side effect of constipation.
People who are overweight, smokers and heavy drinkers have a higher risk of developing the condition. Acid reflux can also be a symptom of hiatus hernia.
You should visit your GP if you experience persistent or recurring acid reflux as this can cause oesophagitis (inflammation of the oesophagus), which can lead to difficulty swallowing if left untreated.
Some antacids also contain ingredients that relieve the symptoms of gas or trapped wind. They are usually taken orally (by mouth) and can be bought over-the-counter at pharmacies and supermarkets, or are prescribed by a doctor.
