Treatment of Aspergillosis
The main treatment is anti-fungal drugs to counteract the infection, sometimes given directly into a vein (intravenously).
Anti-fungal drugs don’t work for allergic reactions so typically steroid drugs (corticosteroids) are used in the form of pills, or by an inhaler. Some people also benefit from allergy desensitisation to prevent allergic reaction in future.
Aspergilloma may not require treatment unless they cause other problems such as pain or bleeding into the lung tissues. They can be surgically removed if necessary.
In all cases regular monitoring such as checking the airflow capacity of the lungs is necessary.
Apergillosis can be fatal in people with reduced immune systems.
