Symptoms of Binge eating

The primary symptom of binge eating is weight gain, and many people suffering from attacks of binge eating are already seriously overweight. People carrying too much weight are vulnerable to other health problems associated with obesity, including:

  • high cholesterol levels,
  • high blood pressure,
  • diabetes,
  • gallbladder disease, and
  • heart disease.

Aside from weight gain, the physical effects on the body caused by fluctuating blood sugar levels are:

  • cravings,
  • stomach pains,
  • intolerance to heat and cold,
  • headaches.

People who binge eat are unable to comprehend why they cannot control their body’s sugar cravings, and become trapped in a cycle of bingeing - guilt - restraint - bingeing. People who binge eat blame themselves for their weakness, and reduce their sense of self-esteem even further. Binge eating may cause the associated psychological problems of:

  • depression,
  • panic attacks,
  • lack of concentration,
  • hopelessness, and
  • anxiety.
