Complications of Birthmarks

Port wine stains around the eye leads to an increased risk of glaucoma. In Sturge- Weber Syndrome the port wine stain is associated with deeper blood vessel abnormality affecting brain function some individuals have learning difficulties. Epilepsy may be present.In Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome, port wine stains occur on a limb causing extra growth of that limb (arm or leg).

A haemangioma near the eye, nose, mouth or nappy area may cause problems with feeding, breathing or other body functions and treatment may be required soon after birth.

Some haemangiomas may disfigure or stretch the skin even when it has completely disappeared.

Rarely haemangiomas can also he present in the internal organs, which may require careful monitioring.

There is a small malignancy risk involved in Congenital melanocytic naevi. Also an accumulation of melanocytes may be present on the surface of the brain, which may interfere with the brain's function. When a CMN is very close to an eye, there is a small risk of an abnormality in the eye glaucoma.
