Treatment of Birthmarks

Although Strawberry marks affect the appearance and, at first, grow with the growth of the child, it is not recommended that these birthmarks are treated surgically as this runs the risk of complications and scarring. They usually completely disappear by the time the child is five.

Stock marks require no treatment and usually disappear before the baby’s first birthday.

Approximately a fifth of haemangioma need treatment due to complications. The treatment may consist of laser treatment, surgery and/or steroids.

Port wine stains can be treated with special dermatological lasers with good results and minimal side effects. Repeated treatment is usually needed.

Congenital melanocytic naevi are sometimes surgically removed. Reasons may include unsightly appearance or worry about malignancy. However, because they can be large and often in awkward sites, surgical removal can be difficult or impossible and may result in some scarring.
