Prevention of Bites
- Keep up to date with your tetanus vaccinations.
- Consider rabies vaccinations if you are travelling to an area where rabies is common.
- Do not approach unfamiliar or stray animals, even if the animal seems tame, especially when abroad.
- Do not touch an animal that is tied up, asleep, in a car, eating, drinking, or with its litter.
- Warn your children of the dangers of approaching or teasing unfamiliar animals.
- If you want to pet a dog, let the dog smell and see you first so you do not alarm it.
- Do not leave a child alone with a dog, as the child may not know the correct way to behave with the animal.
- If a dog is acting aggressively, do not turn your back and run away as the dog might chase you. Remain very still and try to avoid eye contact with an aggressive dog.
