Blood groups
Your body has around 4 – 6 litres (8.5 – 12.5 pints) of blood, which consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in a liquid called plasma.· The plasma contains salt and various proteins.
- The red blood cells transport oxygen and remove carbon dioxide and other waste products.
- White blood cells fight infection.
- Platelets help the blood to clot.
There are differences in human blood known as blood groups. There are four main blood groups: A, B, AB and O. These groups are then either positive or negative meaning that your blood group can be one of eight variations.
