Complications of Broken bones
A compound fracture may involve infection of bone and bone marrow, which may progress to a chronic infection (osteomyelitis) and requires treatment with antibiotics and careful management in hospital.
A fracture may be complicated if the bones are not joined up again or if this is delayed unduly. As a result the bone may lose its blood supply and may die (avascular necrosis).
Fractures near or through joints may result in the joint becoming permanently stiff or unable to bend properly.
