Bronchiectasis

Bronchiectasis is widening of the airways (the bronchial tubes) deep in the lungs.

Often, pockets are formed where infection can develop, damaging the walls of the lungs and causing the lungs’ cleaning system to break down. If this occurs, the tiny hairs (lled cilia) that line the bronchial tubes are destroyed, causing dust, mucus and bacteria to build up.

If this happens, it can become very difficult to cough up phlegm.
