Bronchiolitis

Bronchiolitis is a respiratory condition that most commonly affects babies less than two years old.  This is because children have smaller airways, which can become more easily blocked by mucous.  The condition is usually mild and can be treated at home.

Bronchiolitis occurs when small airways in the lungs called the bronchioles become infected and inflamed, leading to a build-up of mucous.  An airborne virus called respiratory syncytial virus, which is passed from person to person through coughing and sneezing, usually causes the infection.  Most children in the UK pick up this virus by the age of five, although it is often undiagnosed as the symptoms are very similar to those of a common cold.  Occasionally, the symptoms may become more severe and the child may experience difficulty breathing.
