Symptoms of Bronchiolitis

At first, the symptoms are similar to those of a common cold.  They include:

  • blocked or runny nose,
  • mild cough, and
  • shallow or rapid breathing.

After two to three days the symptoms may become more severe, including:

  • increased difficulty breathing,
  • wheezing,
  • very rapid or shallow breathing,
  • rapid heart beat,
  • retractions (when the neck and chest are drawn in with each breath taken),
  • persistent cough,
  • fever,
  • lack of interest in feeding,
  • mild conjunctivitis or pharyngitis,
  • otitis media (a type of ear infection), and,
  • difficulty sleeping.

If the symptoms persist, the child may become increasingly tired because of the breathing difficulties.  This may lead to dehydration if fluid intake is not sufficient.  Vomiting may occur, but is uncommon.  There may also be obvious cyanosis (when the lips and/or skin appears blue due to lack of oxygen in the blood). In such cases medical attention should be sought immediately.
