Bursitis

A bursa is a normal sac or bag of fibrous tissue containing an oily fluid, found usually around joints and in areas where tendons pass over bones. Bursas are lined with a membrane called a synovial membrane which secretes the lubricating fluid. Their function is to ease the movement of tissues over each other in moving joints.

Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa, and most commonly affects the knee, but can occur in any joint including the toes (bunions) and elbow (olecranon bursitis).
