Treatment of Cancer of the ovary
Treatments for ovarian cancer include surgery, chemotherapy and more rarely radiotherapy.
Surgery is usually the first treatment. If the cancer is confined to the ovary, surgery may be all the treatment that is needed Surgery for ovarian cancer usually involves having quite a major operation to remove as much of the cancer as possible. This will involve being in hospital for a week or two.
Chemotherapy may be recommended prior to the operation to reduce the size of the cancer before surgery. Chemotherapy is given after surgery if there is thought to be a risk of some cancer cells remaining.
Radiotherapy is not used for early ovarian cancer but it may be used to control symptoms of more advanced disease.
