Prevention of Cataracts

Mothers who get rubella (German measles) while pregnant can increase the chance of the baby developing a congenital cataract. Make sure you are immunised against the rubella virus before becoming pregnant.

Cataracts that develop as a result of old age cannot be prevented. However, you may reduce your chance of getting a cataract by wearing sunglasses that keep out UVA and UVB rays.
