Symptoms of Cellulitis
The main symptoms include:
- Redness and inflammation of the skin
- Red streaking of the skin
- The affected area spreading and getting bigger
- Warmness to the touch
- Swelling around the infected area
- Pain or tenderness
- Drainage or leaking of yellow clear fluid or pus from the skin
- Glands near the infected area become swollen and tender
- Feeling hot (fever) or cold (chills)
- General feeling of unwell
The nearest glands to the infected area may swell and become tender because they are fighting off the infection to stop it spreading to other parts of the body.
For example:
- The glands in the groin may swell during a cellulitis of the leg.
- Cellulitis on the face may cause enlargement of a lymph node in front of the ear or in the neck.
Cellulitis around the eye (periorbital cellulitis) mainly affects young children. It initially causes redness and swelling of the eyelids. You should seek medical advice immediately.
