Diagnosis of Cirrhosis
If a physical examination suggests liver damage; i.e. if the liver feels enlarged or harder than usual, diagnosis may be supported by liver function tests.
An ultrasound examination or CT scan may then be performed to help diagnose problems in the liver.
Further investigation by biopsy will help make the exact diagnosis. A biopsy is a small sample of tissue taken to study the liver cells under the microscope. This may also give information on the underlying cause of the cirrhosis.
