Symptoms of Congestive heart failure
The symptoms of congestive heart failure are often not noticeable at first, as they may be put down to something else.
They include:
- severe tiredness,
- shortness of breath – especially when doing activities such as climbing the stairs,
- sudden weight gain – due to an accumulation of fluid in legs, ankles and feet,
- a build up of fluid in the abdomen and lungs,
- chest pain,
- a persistent cough, often with mucus and blood,
- a choking feeling, especially at night, and
- difficulty lying flat in bed.
Congestive heart failure can increase the risk of heart attack. It can also lead to other problems such as muscle-wasting, stroke, DVT, lung problems. Eventually, congestive heart failure may severely decrease mobility, leaving the patient unable to move around their own home.
