Cautions of Decongestant drugs
Decongestants are not suitable for young children, and should be used with caution by people who:
- are diabetic,
- have high blood pressure (hypertension),
- are being treated for overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism),
- have ischaemic heart disease, where the supply of blood to the heart is reduced, causing conditions such as angina, heart attack or narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), or
- are taking anti-depressant medication known as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).
