Symptoms of Dental abscess

Abscesses can cause a lot of pain. Tooth abscesses can cause severe aching and tenderness on chewing. They can also cause infection and swelling of the gum.

Other symptoms may include:

  • A wobbly or raised tooth,
  • Swollen lymph nodes (raised bumps in your neck, armpits or groin),
  • Facial swelling,
  • Sensitivity of the tooth to heated foods and liquids, and
  • Raised temperature and feeling generally unwell.

If the abscess bursts releasing pus it is called a gum boil. The pain may then reduce or go away all together but it is important to get treatment for the tooth.

Your dentist will discuss with you the possibilities of placing a root filling in the tooth to stop the abscess coming back.
