Treatment of Dry eye syndrome
Tear film deficiency is usually treated with frequent use of artificial tears. Sometimes the drainage channels are blocked artificially. This can be done, reversibly in the first instance, using gelatine plugs in the tiny openings at the inner ends of the lid margins (lacrimal puncta) into which the tears drain. If this is successful, permanent closure can be obtained by sealing off the puncta with a hot wire (cautery).
