Ear reshaping

Large or prominent ears are often referred to as protruding. Otoplasty is the surgical procedure that some people with protruding ears choose to have, in order to make them appear less prominent. This operation is also referred to as pinnaplasty.

Otoplasty is seen as a form of cosmetic surgery and an adult would only receive treatment on the NHS in very exceptional circumstances where they can demonstrate severe psychological distress.

Children and young teenagers suffering serious emotional stress because their ears stick out are however likely to receive treatment on the NHS.
