Who can use it? of Emergency contraception

Although most women can use emergency pills, women already taking other medications will need to consult a doctor first. A doctor or pharmacist will be able to advise on the best method of emergency contraception.

Women considering using a copper IUD will need to have an examination to check that there is no existing sexually transmitted infection. Women at higher risk of infection (for example, those who have more than one sexual partner) may need to take a course of antibiotics to prevent a pelvic infection occurring.

Women may not be able to use an IUD if they have had previous ectopic pregnancies (when a fertilised egg settles in the fallopian tubes) or any problems with their womb or cervix.
