If the airways become totally blocked by the swelling, and emergency treatment is not given, epiglottitis can be fatal. In rare cases, an infection can spread from the epiglottis to nearby parts of the body, such as:

inner ear (otitis media),
brain (meningitis),
heart lining (pericarditis), or
lungs (pneumonia).
