Causes of Frostbite

Frostbite is caused by exposure of the body to cold. Severe weather conditions, low temperatures, wind chill and inadequate clothing protection are the major factors.

Developing frostbite will depend on:

  • length of time of exposure to the cold,
  •  suitability of clothing and whether clothing is wet,
  •  temperature,
  •  force of the wind (wind chill factor), and
  •  humidity of the air.

Those with circulation problems and those with previous cold injuries are especially susceptible to frostbite. Also those who have been drinking alcohol or taking certain drugs such as beta-blockers for heart problems.
