GPs
General Practitioners (GPs) are among a group of health professionals who offer a first line of contact between patients and the NHS. Usually, a small group of GPs work together in a practice. Sometimes it might be called a surgery, clinic or health centre. Only a small number of GPs now work by themselves in a single-handed practice.
GP practices, along with other local health services like opticians and pharmacies are grouped together into primary care trusts (PCTs).
GPs provide consultations in surgeries and through home visits. Most GPs are not NHS staff. They are independent contractors to the NHS, providing their own premises, and employing their own staff.
