Causes of Gangrene
Gangrene is commonly caused by severe arterial disease such as atherosclerosis, in which not enough blood can get through the narrowed arteries to the affected area. Diabetes also increases the possibility of gangrene, mainly by its effect on the blood vessels, but also by reducing the body’s ability to resist infection.
Other important causes include embolism, blood clotting in an artery (Thrombosis) and severe arterial injury.
