Causes of Gastroenteritis
Viruses such as the rotaviruses or Norwalk-type viruses usually cause cases of gastroenteritis in the UK. You may find theses viruses in contaminated foods such as shellfish, and contaminated water, or they can be passed from person to person.
Bacteria such as E.coli, salmonella and campylobacter can also cause gastroenteritis. They can come from contaminated food or water, often as a result of poor hygiene in food preparation. On holiday outside the UK you should find out whether water is safe to drink. Contaminated water can cause infection both when drunk, used to make ice, and when used in the preparation of raw foods such as salad vegetables.
