Complications of Gastroesophageal reflux disease

In rare cases, GORD can cause further health problems.

If you have severe inflammation of your oesophagus, it can cause scarring and narrowing at the lower end of the oesophagus, near the join with the stomach. This is called stricture and can lead to problems with digestion, such as food sticking when you swallow. It is quite rare and can be treated with surgery, but you should tell your doctor if you have pain or difficulty swallowing.

Oesophagitis (inflammation of the oesophagus) can lead to the formation of painful ulcers inside the oesophagus. These may bleed and can lead to anaemia, due to blood loss.

People who have acid reflux frequently, over a long period of time, also have a slightly increased risk of developing cancer of the oesophagus.

Some people who have GORD find that it greatly affects the quality of their life. This can lead to mental health problems such as depression.
