Prevention of Gastroesophageal reflux disease

There are some lifestyle changes you can make to help prevent GORD developing, or simple heartburn turning into GORD. These include:

  • Quitting smoking, as smoking can make GORD worse;
  • Avoiding foods that you find bring on heartburn, and not eating very large meals;
  • If you think medicines you’re taking for other conditions are causing symptoms, talk to your GP about other treatments;
  • If you’re overweight try losing weight, to reduce pressure on the stomach;
  • Altering your posture – avoid wearing tight belts or leaning forward a lot during the day;
  • If you have symptoms at night, try not eating three hours before bed, and not drinking two hours before. If you must have a drink, sip water or milky drinks, and avoid caffeine.
