Giardiasis

Giardiasis is an infection of the intestines (gut) caused by a microscopic parasite called Giardia lamblia which lives in faeces (stools).

Giardia is a type of single celled organism called a protozoa (these are different to bacteria). It’s one of the most common causes of diarrhoea throughout the world, and is often the cause of so-called ‘traveller’s diarrhoea’.

Giardia is a major cause of childhood diarrhoea in developing countries and is common in Eastern Europe and across the USA. It’s also the most common gut parasite in the UK and affects more children than adults.
