Diagnosis of Goitre

Thyroid function tests will show hormone levels and demonstrate over- and under-activity of the gland. Ultrasound scanning can show up nodules. Fine-needle biopsy of nodules can distinguish those few cases caused by cancer. A scan of the thyroid gland using radioactive iodine can distinguish functioning from non-functioning nodules. A functioning nodule is hardly ever cancerous. About 10 per cent of non-functioning nodules are cancerous.
