Diagnosis of Gout

Your GP will assess your symptoms, and if they think that you may have gout, a blood test can be done to check the levels of uric acid in your blood.

If there is still some doubt over the diagnosis, because for example your symptoms may be similar to arthritis, some fluid can be taken from the swollen joint using a needle and syringe. The fluid can then be checked under a microscope to see whether any crystals of uric acid can be seen.
