Complications of Gout

Although it is uncommon to experience further complications with gout, if your uric acid remains high because it is untreated, attacks can become more frequent and prolonged. This can eventually lead to permanent damage to the affected joint.

In some people, the uric acid crystals can form into kidney stones. These can be treated using a special operating telescope to remove them, or using focused acoustic shock waves (ultrasound energy), which can break them up and allow them to be passed naturally in the urine.
