Complications of Haemophilia

Before the dangers of HIV infection were fully recognised, pooled blood containing the HIV virus was used to produce Factor VIII concentrates and many haemophiliacs acquired the disease between 1979 and 1985. All blood concentrate is now heat treated to kill the virus.

Hepatitis B is also a problem, and many haemophiliacs have, in the past, contracted the disease. Blood for transfusion is now carefully screened. Routine vaccination against hepatitis A and B is offered to all haemophiliacs.
