Complications of Hand, foot and mouth disease
If the child is not given enough fluids, there is a risk of dehydration. In very rare cases, hand, foot and mouth disease can lead to problems such as heart failure and pneumonia.
If a pregnant woman catches hand, foot and mouth disease in the first trimester of pregnancy (weeks 0-13) it may result in a miscarriage or damage to the baby. However, it is worth remembering that the virus is rare in healthy adults. Phone NHS Direct on 0845 4647 for further advice.
