Causes of Hepatitis A

The hepatitis A virus is found in stools of affected people. The disease is easily spread in areas of overcrowding and poor sanitation.

The most common cause of infection is person- to-person contact due to poor personal hygiene. Drinking water can also become contaminated where sewage treatment is poor.

Any uncooked foods, including raw fruit and vegetables, untreated drinking water and ice cubes and all food prepared or washed with contaminated water are at a high risk of transmitting the infection. Shellfish can be infected if it comes from sea contaminated with sewage.
