Hernia, hiatus

A hiatus hernia is an internal hernia in which the upper part of the stomach protrudes upwards through the opening in the diaphragm through which the gullet (oesophagus) passes. A small part of the stomach rises into the opening where the gullet passes through the diaphragm.

The main effect is that the mechanism that stops acid from regurgitating into the gullet from the stomach can’t operate. Highly irritating stomach contents are able to move up into the oesophagus, producing damage to the lining and the condition of oesophagitis. This reflux may also cause heartburn.
