Complications of Hernia, inguinal

In some circumstances a loop of the intestine can push through the weakness and become trapped, or strangulated. A strangulated hernia produces severe pain and is a surgical emergency. In a strangulated hernia, the blood supply is cut off and gangrene can set in. In an inguinal hernia, gangrene can lead to perforation of the bowel and subsequently peritonitis
