Recovery of Ileostomy

Ileostomy - speed of recovery depends on the state of the disease, the complexity of the surgery and the age and overall health of the person.

Normal activities are normally possible 4-8 weeks after surgery although strenuous activity should be avoided for about 3 months. The average stay in hospital is around 10-12 days after the operation. The abdominal wall will initially be very sore but this soon settles down. Pain relief is important to help you recover and so that you can keep as active as possible. Keeping active can help to reduce the chance of complications.

People with a stoma are entitled to free prescriptions for stoma care products on the NHS. Specialist stoma care nurses, working in conjunction with the GP and district nurses, have the responsibility to equip people with a stoma, and to help them acquire the skills to manage all aspects of stoma care.
