Incontinence, faecal

Faecal incontinence (also called bowel incontinence or anal incontinence) involves the involuntary loss of solid or liquid stool (faeces) or gas from the anus. This can result in embarrassment, distress and an impaired quality of life. Its severity ranges from mild difficulty with gas control to severe loss of control over liquid and formed stools.

Faecal incontinence can affect otherwise healthy, active individuals of all ages, although it is more common in older adults with long-term health and mobility problems. Faecal incontinence is a treatable condition. Treatment can lessen symptoms or in some cases bring about a complete cure.
