Prevention of Ingrown toenail

Your chances of developing an ingrown toenail are reduced if you cut your nails properly. Cut your nails straight across and don’t cut too low at the edge or down the side. Cut them after a bath or shower when they are soft.

You should also practice good hygiene – keep your feet clean and dry, wear clean socks in natural fibres (cotton or wool) and change your shoes regularly so each pair has a chance to dry out. Wear open-toed sandals or blunt toed shoes.

Also wear shoes and socks that fit properly. Tight shoes can press on the toenails, causing them to become ingrown.

See your GP or podiatrist for advice and care if you suspect a problem. Soak your feet for 30 minutes in warm water four times a day while waiting for an appointment.
