Advantages of Intrauterine device (IUD)

Once an IUD is fitted, it is immediately effective at preventing pregnancy and will be for up to ten years, or until it is removed.  It can also be used as a method of emergency contraception for up to five days after unprotected sex.  A doctor can remove an IUD at any time (usually during your period), but alternative contraception will need to be used after removal to prevent pregnancy, as fertility will return to normal straightaway in most cases. You should use condoms in the seven days before your IUD is taken out, as sperm can live inside the body for up to seven days.

The IUD is a popular method of contraception; many people find it easier than condoms or the pill.
