How does it work? of Intrauterine system
An IUS works by releasing the female hormone progestogen into the body, which thickens the mucus from the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.
Progestogen also thins the womb lining making it harder for the womb to accept a fertilised egg. Some women stop ovulating (when the ovary releases an egg) completely.
