Irritable hip

All of the body’s joints have a layer of thin, delicate tissue that lubricates movement – this lining is called the synovial membrane. Irritable hip occurs when this membrane becomes swollen and inflamed in the hip area.

Irritable hip is fairly common in children, generally affecting those between 3 and 10 years old (although the condition is more common in boys). It causes pain and limited movement around the hip joint, and often in the thigh, groin and knee areas too, making standing and walking difficult.

As a parent, it can be very worrying if your child is diagnosed with irritable hip and is struggling to walk. However, the condition is often short-lived and has no further complications – complete rest for 1-2 weeks is usually all that is needed.
