Symptoms of Kawasaki disease

The first set of symptoms commonly last up to 10 or 11 days. They include

  •  Irritability
  • Sudden onset of fever (high temperature) that lasts for 5 days or longer
  •  Red eyes (conjunctivitis).
  • Changes in the mouth: - such as a red throat, very red spotty tongue or dry, red and cracked lips with possible bleeding.
  •  A blotchy pink rash, which usually appears within 5 days after the fever starts and disappears within a week.
  •  Enlarged, swollen lymph glands in the neck.
  • Swelling and redness of the hands and feet, so the child may refuse to walk.

The next stage is called the recovery period, and lasts for about 10 days. During this time the skin of the fingers and toes peels. There may also be continued irritability, diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pains, joint swelling and muscle pains, and jaundice (skin goes yellow).

Heart problems such as aneurysms (ballooning of blood vessels) may develop during this stage.
